Priority lending, payment protection, and tax benefits tied to a registration many skip.

Udyam registration — the current MSME registration process — is free, done entirely online through Aadhaar and PAN verification, and takes a matter of minutes. Despite that, a large share of genuinely eligible small businesses never register, simply because the benefits aren't obvious until you actually need them.
Registered micro and small enterprises have a real, enforceable right under the MSMED Act: if a buyer doesn't pay within 45 days, you're entitled to interest at three times the RBI's benchmark rate on the delayed amount — and you can pursue it through the statutory MSME facilitation mechanism, not just informally chase the client. Unregistered, this protection doesn't exist for you at all.
Udyam-registered businesses fall under the Reserve Bank of India's Priority Sector Lending framework, which can make it easier to access formal credit and puts you in view for schemes like the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) — collateral-free lending support that unregistered businesses simply aren't eligible for.
Many businesses assume MSME registration only matters if you're bidding for government contracts, where it's sometimes mandatory. But the payment protection and lending benefits apply regardless of whether you ever touch a government tender — for a small business regularly waiting on client payments, the 45-day protection alone is often worth the ten minutes it takes to register.
